Building Department Purpose and Function

  • Ensure public safety along with health and welfare during building construction and renovation as part of the building permit process
  • Secure the safety of life and property from hazards incidental to the design, erection, repair, and occupancy of buildings through proper inspection practices with qualified building inspectors
  • Preserve the appearance and property value of existing housing through efficient code enforcement

Responsibilities

  • Adopt, administer and enforce the Village of Long Grove building codes and local ordinances
  • Review building plans, issue permits and perform inspections to ensure that construction conforms to applicable codes
  • Investigate complaints related to building codes and local ordinances; notify property owners when a confirmed situation does not meet Village Code and ensure that corrections are made

If you have an emergency project such as a water heater, furnace or a/c replacement, or a sewer repair, and it is outside of normal business hours, please proceed with the critical repair or replacement and follow up with the Building Department on the next business day by email (or click "APPLY ONLINE NOW" ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THIS PAGE) for a permit and inspection. In such emergencies, please do not wait for a response or permit from the Village. Paperwork and payments may be submitted post-emergency.

  • Permit Application: Permit applications and electronic copies of plans are currently being accepted by the Building Department emailPlease follow the checklist on the permit application for submittal requirements. Email a scanned copy of your permit application along with one electronic copy of each required document, together in one email, to the Building Commissioner. Please pay the listed application fee + security deposit amounts online and email the payment confirmation page along with your other submittal documents.
  • Scheduling an Inspection: Submit your request for a building inspection via this link: “Schedule a Building Inspection”. Inspections are performed Monday through Friday, on regular business days, mornings only, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Next-day requests must be submitted before 12:00 p.m. on the preceding business day. Due to the limited available timeframe for inspections, the inspection schedule is filled on a first-requested/first-filled basis.

  • Re-roof
  • Siding
  • Windows (no change in opening sizes)
  • Water Heater
  • AC
  • Furnace
  • Driveway (no change in layout, dimensions, grading)
  • Hardscape (Patio or Walkway; no change in layout, dimensions, grading)
  • Sewer Repair

Effective October 1st, 2022, the Village Board approved the waiver of the $50.00 permit application fee for all online permit applicants for the Remove & Replace projects listed above. For these projects only, the only fees due will be for the required building inspections and, where applicable, a refundable security deposit.

The online application process should be fairly straightforward however instructions are also available below for reference for both homeowners and contractors.

Effective January 1st, 2023, paper and emailed permit applications for these Remove & Replace projects will no longer be accepted.
