Open Burn General Requirements

The Village has open burn requirements to help manage and control the spread of invasive species and other plant material. Open burning, also known as prescribed burning, is a management technique used to mimic natural processes of fire, which can help promote the growth of new plants, reduce the spread of invasive species, and improve the overall health of ecosystems.

In Long Grove, open burning is regulated by the village government, which requires residents to obtain a permit and follow specific guidelines when conducting prescribed burns. The open burn requirements help ensure that prescribed burns are conducted safely and effectively and do not pose a risk to nearby homes and infrastructure.

In addition to managing invasive species, open burning can also help reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfires by reducing the amount of fuel available for fires to spread. Open burning can also help reduce air pollution by burning away dead and diseased plant material, which can release pollutants into the air if left to decompose naturally.

Long Grove Open Burn Guidelines/Restrictions: (Updated August 11, 2020)

  1. Burning of leaves and landscape waste is prohibited
  2. Burning of construction materials, garbage and household/commercial waste are prohibited
  3. Tree branches can be burned in piles measuring 3’x3’x3’.  When the fire protection district grants permission, bundles measuring 5’x5’x5’ can be burned.  Fires over 5’x5’x5’ are not allowed.
  4. A burn permit is required from the fire protection district to perform an open burn related to prairie conservation.  To obtain an open burn permit, an open burn permit application must be submitted to the Village.  The Village adds the property to a list submitted to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA).  Once the Village receives confirmation from the IEPA, the approved list of properties is shared with the fire protection districts. It is posted on the Village website, where an open burn permit can be obtained from the fire protection district.
